As written by acclaimed shoe historian and senior curator at the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto, Elizabeth Semmelhack’s Out of the Box: The Rise of Sneaker Culture is a concise look at a variety of groundbreaking sneakers from the mid-nineteenth century to pioneering sports models and present-day cultural icons. Calling on the collection of the Bata Shoe Museum, Semmelhack has also enlisted the help of adidas AG, the Kosow Sneaker Museum, as well as the Converse, Nike and Reebok Archives. The publication is thoughtful, highly educational and covers many bases from interviews with prominent design innovators to the marketing campaigns that came to define modern day sneaker culture. With contribution from Tinker Hatfield and Bobbito Garcia, Out of the Box: The Rise of Sneaker Culture will be available directly from Rizzoli on July 7 for $45 USD.
